Moldova summons Russian envoy after three drones violate its airspace

On 1 October Moldova’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador-designate after three drones entered Moldovan airspace during Russian attacks on Ukraine; two crashed and exploded on Moldovan territory, Moldpres reported.

Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1 October summoned Russia’s ambassador-designate in Chișinău after three drones violated the country’s airspace amid Russian attacks on Ukraine, the state agency Moldpres reported. Two of the aircraft crashed and exploded on Moldovan territory. The ministry said the incidents directly threaten the security of Moldovan citizens and called on Russia to stop attacks on Ukraine and any actions that endanger Moldova.

Brănești and other incidents

The most serious incident occurred Wednesday evening near Brănești in Orhei district. Authorities said a Geran-model drone with a turbojet engine struck trees and exploded near a public road; fragments were found within about 120 meters. Road traffic was temporarily suspended and airspace over the central region was closed. Police technical experts said debris near the Ivancea–Brănești road contained elements specific to a Geran drone. IPN reported fragments marked “Geran-4,” electronic components and a turbojet engine. Another drone fell and exploded near Harbovat, damaging a telecommunications antenna; a third jet drone crossed via the Transnistrian region toward Soroca.

Protest note

According to IPN, the MFA handed a protest note to agreed ambassador Oleg Ozerov, condemning a “serious violation” of sovereignty that endangered citizens’ lives, and said Moldovan airspace had been violated eight times in the previous seven days.
