Drone strike kills at least 40, including children, in Sudan's Blue Nile province

The monitoring group Emergency Lawyers blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for Friday's strike in the Abu Shandi area near the Ethiopian border; the UN humanitarian office said it was appalled.

A drone strike on Friday, 9 October, killed at least 40 people, including children, in the Abu Shandi area of Sudan’s Blue Nile province near the border with Ethiopia, according to Emergency Lawyers, a group that tracks the war, AP reported on Saturday.

The group said the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been fighting Sudan’s army since April 2023, was responsible. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was appalled by the strike.

The wider war

According to the conflict monitor ACLED, the war between the army and the RSF has killed at least 150,000 people; aid groups say the real toll is likely higher. Drone attacks on civilian areas have become a recurring feature of the conflict as fighting has spread from Darfur and Kordofan to other regions, including Blue Nile.

AP said there was no immediate independent confirmation of the toll.
