Anthropic's Jack Clark at IMF meetings: internal model sees AI lifting US GDP to $44 trillion by 2030
Speaking in Bangkok on 17 October, the Anthropic co-founder said AI is changing all fields faster and called for international cooperation on "unusual and serious rules" for the technology.
Rapidly improving artificial intelligence will bring far faster change across all fields, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said on Saturday, 17 October, at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Reuters reported.
The forecast
- One of the company’s internal economic models forecasts that AI could expand US economic output to $44 trillion by 2030, Clark said, compared with a current level of just over $30 trillion.
- Clark acknowledged the figure “sounds very outlandish”, but said it follows from the technology continuing to improve, and that AI is greatly increasing scientific discovery.
- If GDP grew that much, he said, economic doctrine suggests new industries and inventions would need to have been created to power such an expansion.
Call for rules
Clark said international cooperation is needed to set up “unusual and serious rules” for the transformative technology.
Note: the $44 trillion number is a projection from a company model, not an official or independent forecast.
