Russian drone strike on a park kills a baby and her mother as attacks across Ukraine kill at least 14

Russian missile, drone and artillery attacks killed at least 14 people and injured 71 across Ukraine over the past day, regional authorities said on 19-20 October, The Kyiv Independent reported.

A park in Kharkiv region

The deadliest strike hit a park near a café in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv region, on Monday. Six people were killed, including two children. A one-year-old girl, Anhelina, was killed in her stroller, and her mother, Inna Mariukhna, later died of her injuries in hospital. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack an “absolute atrocity”, said the drone “struck people directly”, and urged allies to provide more air defence while warning against deals with Russia or easing sanctions.

The Kyiv Independent noted that images of the dead child spread on Ukrainian social media at almost the same time as President Donald Trump told reporters that “Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.”

Other regions

• Kyiv: at least one person was killed and six injured when a drone struck morning commuter traffic in the Holosiivskyi district, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
• Kyiv region: three people were killed and six injured in Obukhiv district.
• Donetsk region: one person was killed and eight injured in Kramatorsk, Sloviansk and nearby villages.
• Dnipropetrovsk region: a strike on an industrial enterprise in Kryvyi Rih killed two and injured eight.
• Zaporizhzhia region: one person was killed in 848 attacks on 52 settlements; in Kherson region, 18 people, including a child, were injured.

Overnight into 20 October, Russia launched 165 drones, 105 of them jet-powered, and Ukraine’s air force said it shot down or suppressed 115. Power outages were reported in 12 regions. The strikes came as Zelensky arrived in Norway for talks with US and European officials, AP reported.
