US midterms: early voting surges in Senate battlegrounds as voters say costs and the Iran war matter most

Two weeks before the 3 November midterm elections, early-vote turnout is far above the last midterm in many states that will decide control of the Senate, an AP analysis found. An AP-NORC poll shows about 8 in 10 voters want Congress to prioritise lowering living costs.

Voter turnout is soaring compared with the last midterm election in many of the states expected to decide control of the US Senate, according to an Associated Press analysis of early voting published on Thursday, 22 October — two weeks before Election Day on 3 November.

What voters want

A new AP-NORC poll found that about 8 in 10 registered voters, including large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats, say lowering the cost of living should be one of the highest priorities for the next Congress. Roughly 7 in 10 say ending the war with Iran should be a top focus. About 4 in 10 want Congress to make investigating the Trump administration a top priority, AP reported.

Campaign trail

Party leaders were campaigning in key states this week, AP reported, as both sides try to turn out their voters in the races that will determine which party controls the House and Senate.
