Russian attacks kill five and injure at least 46 in Ukraine; about 280,000 homes left without power

Ukraine's air force said it downed 105 of 134 Russian drones overnight; Zelenskyy called the power situation "difficult" as Moscow keeps targeting the grid ahead of winter.

Russian attacks killed five people and injured at least 46 across Ukraine over the past day, regional authorities said on 31 October, as Moscow pressed on with strikes against the country’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter, The Kyiv Independent reports.

Overnight attack

Ukraine’s air force said its forces downed 105 of 134 drones, including jet-powered attack drones, launched by Russia overnight. Drones hit 20 locations, and debris fell in 10 more.

Victims

  • Donetsk region: two people were killed in Sloviansk and 16 more were injured in the region, Governor Vadym Filashkin said.
  • Sumy region: a 43-year-old woman was killed in a drone attack near Shostka; seven men and seven women were injured in the region.
  • Dnipropetrovsk region: one person was killed and four injured near Nikopol, Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said.

Power cuts

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the power situation as “difficult”: around 200,000 homes in Dnipropetrovsk region and another 80,000 in Kyiv region were without electricity.

The strikes continued as a local truce around occupied Oleshky, brokered with US involvement, allowed the evacuation of civilians; AP reported that evacuees reached Ukrainian-held territory via Belarus on Saturday. The truce was due to end on Sunday night.
