Russia resumes strikes on Kherson hours after the six-day Oleshky truce ends

A drone hit a car and a hospital in Kherson on Monday morning after the longest pause of the full-scale war; 180 people, including 23 children, were evacuated during the truce.

Russian forces resumed attacks on Ukraine’s Kherson region on Monday, hours after a local ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky expired, Kyiv said. The truce, which the US said was brokered by first lady Melania Trump, ran from Tuesday to Sunday — the longest pause in fighting since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, Euronews reported.

Monday morning

  • At around 8:00 a.m., a Russian drone attacked a car in Kherson’s Korabelny district, wounding a 62-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man, local authorities said.
  • A drone also hit a hospital at 7:40 a.m.; officials said nobody was hurt.
  • A senior Ukrainian official told AFP on Sunday that Russia had refused a Ukrainian offer to extend the truce.

What the pause achieved

According to AP, 180 people, including 23 children, were evacuated from riverside communities and the city of Kherson, and aid workers reached villages that had been cut off for nearly two years. Russia’s human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova said the ceasefire passed without violations but acknowledged that “far fewer” than the 750 people Russia had prepared buses for actually left; she said she and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets want “at least monthly” humanitarian missions.

Elsewhere overnight

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 193 drones overnight into Monday, of which 154 were shot down or suppressed. One person was killed in Izium, dozens were injured in the Kharkiv and Odesa regions, and Bila Tserkva near Kyiv lost its water supply, Kyiv Post reported. US-mediated Russia–Ukraine talks are due to resume this month; the Kremlin has rejected calls for a wider ceasefire.
