Melania Trump hosts Russian and Ukrainian officials after Oleshky truce; Trump meets Putin envoy

The US first lady welcomed Russian and Ukrainian delegates at the White House after a six-day ceasefire in occupied Oleshky; President Trump said he met Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev and predicted a broader deal, with US-mediated talks set for Abu Dhabi on 10–11 November.

US First Lady Melania Trump on Thursday hosted Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House to mark a six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky (Kherson region), calling for a “more enduring” truce, the BBC reported.

Who attended

Delegations included Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, Russia’s Yana Lantratova, Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia, and Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev. Melania Trump handed Dmitriev and Arakhamia personal letters for their presidents.

Trump and talks

President Donald Trump later told reporters he had met privately with Dmitriev but not the Ukrainian delegation. He predicted “a big, beautiful agreement” that “might involve all of Europe.” NBC News / Reuters reported that a US delegation is due to mediate Russia–Ukraine talks in Abu Dhabi on 10–11 November. Jared Kushner said Brussels discussions covered security guarantees and a broader European security framework.

Oleshky and the wider war

Hundreds of Oleshky residents facing starvation and bombardment were able to evacuate during the truce, which both Moscow and Kyiv credited Trump with brokering; the ceasefire expired on Sunday. Arakhamia called it the “biggest de-escalation since 2022.” Zelensky said the episode showed that “when Putin wants the fighting to stop, it stops.” Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russian strikes continued; the BBC noted that more than 40 people were killed on Monday in a strike on an aid centre in Zaporizhzhia.
