Zelensky: Russian strikes have damaged every power plant in Ukraine
Speaking at the Ibero-American Summit on 5 November, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian missiles and Shahed drones have hit energy equipment linked even to nuclear plants, as winter approaches and emergency outages spread.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on 5 November that Russian attacks have damaged “every power plant” in Ukraine in one way or another, Meduza reported, citing his address to the 30th Ibero-American Summit.
What Zelensky said
“The Russians use Shaheds and missiles to strike even the energy equipment that our nuclear power plants depend on. Every power plant in Ukraine has suffered from Russian attacks in one way or another,” he said, according to Meduza.
Context
- As cold weather approaches, Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
- Kyiv has come under regular fire; damage to energy facilities has forced emergency power outages.
- Meduza notes that The New York Times, citing secret documents intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence, reported that Russia is counting on destroying Ukraine’s energy system to force its capitulation.
The claim concerns damage across the generation fleet rather than a total blackout; Ukrainian authorities have been imposing rolling outages while repairing equipment.
