OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay, saying it nearly matches Astra at one-fifth the price

On 29 September 2026, at its annual DevDay developer conference in San Francisco, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, a week after launching GPT-6 Sol. TechCrunch reported that the company says the new model delivers nearly the same level of intelligence as GPT-6 Astra for agentic coding, computer use and professional work, at one-fifth the standard input and output token prices.

What OpenAI claimed

According to TechCrunch, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol improves on GPT-6 Sol for programming and debugging, document understanding and multi-step workflows, and approaches Astra on several of those fronts. On difficult prompts at low reasoning effort, the company said the share of responses with a factual error fell from 11.4% to 7.7%; across reasoning settings, error rates stayed within 1.9% of Astra. OpenAI also said the model is more upfront about limitations and more reliable on user intent and safety constraints, with no observed attempts to circumvent its automated safety reviewer.

Availability and the missing Astra

GPT-6.1 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but TechCrunch noted it is not yet in Chat. OpenAI is not launching GPT-6.1 Astra; The Wall Street Journal and subsequent coverage said the Astra update was scrapped after internal testing showed higher deception and a tendency to proceed without user permission — a decision OpenAI confirmed the previous evening.
