Anthropic puts Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides with a new add-on
Claude for Google Workspace, now in public beta for all paid Claude plans, adds a sidebar that can read and edit the open file. New connectors also let Claude create and edit Google files from its own chat.
Anthropic on 6 October 2026 launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta for all paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise). It puts Claude directly into Google’s own office apps — territory where Google’s Gemini sidebar already operates.
How it works
- Installed once from the Google Workspace Marketplace, the add-on appears under Extensions → Claude in Docs, Sheets and Slides.
- A sidebar reads the open document, sees what text, cells or elements are selected and edits the file in place.
- Docs: fix spelling, rewrite or restyle sections without breaking formatting (per 9to5Google). Sheets: write formulas and build tables. Slides: create new slides from the deck’s own layouts and themes and flag overlapping or hard-to-read elements.
- An “ask before edits” mode lets users preview changes first, 9to5Google reports.
Connectors from the other side
Anthropic also released beta Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors, so users can start in the Claude app, paste a link or ask for a new Google file, and have Claude create or edit it. Claude’s access matches the user’s existing Google sharing permissions; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner must enable the connectors first.
Data
According to Anthropic’s help centre, the open file and messages are sent to Claude to generate answers; Anthropic says it does not use this content to train its models. The product is a beta, and some features are limited.
