Nvidia in talks to buy or deepen stake in open-model start-up Reflection AI, FT reports
According to the Financial Times, Nvidia is discussing an acquisition of, or a larger investment in, Reflection AI, a US developer of open-weight models the Trump administration hopes can rival cheap Chinese alternatives.
Nvidia is in talks to acquire or deepen its investment in Reflection AI, a US start-up that builds open-weight AI models, the Financial Times reported, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter.
Why it matters
- Open-weight models publish their trained parameters so others can run and adapt them. Chinese labs have led much of this segment with low-cost releases.
- According to the FT, the Trump administration hopes Reflection AI can become a US rival to those cheap Chinese alternatives.
- Nvidia already invests widely in AI start-ups whose models run on its chips; owning or controlling a US open-model developer would take that strategy a step further.
What is not known
The report describes talks, not a signed deal. Terms, valuation and whether a transaction will happen were not confirmed publicly, and neither company had announced an agreement at the time of writing. Sardaana.org will update if there is an official statement.
