OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra, a cheaper model built to operate computers

OpenAI's new mid-range model is aimed at reading screens, clicking through apps and filling in forms. Its API price is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, half that of GPT-5.6 Terra, according to OpenAI.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026, describing it as a fast, efficient model that combines visual reasoning with precise computer use: operating browsers, desktop software and apps, filling in forms or interpreting technical drawings.

Price and availability

  • In the API (gpt-6.1-terra), standard prices are $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 for cached input and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says this is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Batch and Flex prices are half the standard rate.
  • In ChatGPT Work and Codex it is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users. Microsoft also made it available in its Foundry platform.

OpenAI’s performance claims

On its Agents’ Last Exam benchmark of professional tasks, OpenAI says Terra at medium effort scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about a third of the cost, performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at a tenth of its price per token, and finishes tasks more than three times faster than Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

These are the company’s own figures; independent tests have not yet been published.

Why it matters

Cheaper computer-use models make it practical to automate high-volume office work, such as entering invoice details into accounting software — and also raise the stakes of agents acting on their own inside real systems.
