OpenAI to put ChatGPT and Codex on one shared token allowance from December
An updated OpenAI Help Center page says Plus, Pro and Business subscribers will draw on a single token-based budget for ChatGPT and Codex as Work's agent features move into the main app.
OpenAI is changing how paid ChatGPT plans meter usage, according to a newly updated OpenAI Help Center page described by DailyAI, AI/TLDR and The Decoder.
What changes
- From December 2026, Plus, Pro and Business subscribers will use one shared allowance for both ChatGPT and the Codex coding agent instead of separate limits.
- The allowance is measured in tokens, so larger models and harder tasks consume more of it.
- Chats using the fast Instant models will not count against the pool. The combined balance will be shown under Settings > Usage.
- OpenAI ties the change to moving the agent features of ChatGPT Work into the main ChatGPT experience.
What is still unknown
OpenAI says it expects most people will not hit a limit more often than today, but, according to the reports, it has not published per-plan token amounts or an exact start date. Users who rely heavily on both chat and Codex will now spend from the same budget; when it runs out, the options are to wait for a reset, upgrade or buy credits.
