WHO: Irkutsk lab worker's fatal pneumonia still undiagnosed, no sign of spread

An employee of the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute died on 2 October; Russian authorities say tests for high-threat pathogens were negative and all contacts stayed healthy.

The World Health Organization published a Disease Outbreak News report on 10 October about the death of an employee of the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.

What is known

  • WHO learned of the case from media reports on 2 October. The worker was hospitalised with severe pneumonia on 29 September and died on 2 October; media reports suggested pneumonic plague after laboratory exposure.
  • Russia’s IHR focal point told WHO that no plague case had recently been registered in Irkutsk Oblast, that the patient and all contacts tested negative for high-threat pathogens, and that no biosecurity incident occurred in the lab — contrary to media reports.
  • All contacts were medically followed and remained symptom-free; quarantine measures were applied at the hospital.

Limitations

WHO says it has found no evidence of ongoing transmission, but stresses that the cause of death has not been confirmed — the key uncertainty. Its assessment relies on information supplied by national authorities, and WHO will keep monitoring.
