Stella McCartney’s SS27 Paris show puts oceans and overfishing on the runway
Stella McCartney presented a Spring/Summer 2027 collection of floaty fabrics, bubble hems and wave motifs at the British ambassador’s residence in Paris on Wednesday, with a David Attenborough voiceover and a call for luxury houses to scale sustainable materials, Reuters reported via FashionNetwork.
Stella McCartney used her Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 show on Wednesday to spotlight overfishing and climate pressure on the oceans, unveiling floaty fabrics, bubble hems and wave motifs in the gardens of the British ambassador’s residence, FashionNetwork reported, citing Reuters.
Look and message
The show opened with a voiceover from natural historian David Attenborough: “We must open our eyes to what is happening right now below the waves — we have drained the life from our ocean.” Models wore low-rise trousers with raised wave embroidery, tops with voluminous bubble hems, and sheer blazers; the palette ran aqua, bright blue and coral. Killer whales, sharks and dolphins appeared on looks; transparent handbags held sea creatures such as a starfish. After the show McCartney said the fishing industry was “stealth, it’s war,” and asked audiences to choose between “sea life or seafood.”
Materials and industry ask
McCartney’s brand uses no leather and invests in more sustainably produced cotton, wool and leather alternatives from mushrooms or grape byproducts. Having bought the brand back from LVMH at the start of last year, she urged big luxury groups to help scale organic cotton and lab-grown wool: good intentions matter more, she said, if major houses accept new supply chains that smaller sustainable brands also need.
