Vivienne Westwood SS27 ‘Body and Soul’: Kronthaler calls fashion a ‘precarious moment’

On 3 October at Paris Fashion Week, Andreas Kronthaler showed Vivienne Westwood Spring/Summer 2027, titled “Body and Soul,” drawing on African fabrics from Paris’s Barbès market and nightgowns worn outdoors in summer heatwaves, AFP reported. He told AFP the industry is in a “very precarious moment” as independent houses face hard trading conditions.

Andreas Kronthaler unveiled Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, “Body and Soul,” on Saturday, 3 October, at Paris Fashion Week, pairing whimsical runway looks with a blunt assessment of the commercial climate, AFP reported.

Nightgowns, Barbès fabric, star walkers

Kronthaler, who took creative charge after Vivienne Westwood’s death, said inspiration included African fabric bought at Paris’s Barbès market and his habit of wearing a nightgown outdoors during summer heatwaves — what he called his “life shirt.” Actress Natasha Lyonne walked in an animal-print jacket with nothing underneath; Heidi Klum, Rose McGowan and Paris Jackson were among front-row guests, AFP said.

‘Precarious moment’

Asked about trading conditions and pressure on creative directors elsewhere, Kronthaler said Vivienne Westwood’s independence has “good sides” and “hard sides,” adding: “We are living in a very precarious moment because things are not so secure in fashion.” AFP noted recent media speculation about possible exits at other houses including Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Chloé, without confirmation from those brands.
