Mugler SS27: Miguel Castro Freitas closes his 'Naturalia' trilogy with insects, feathers and a Manfred look-alike
At Paris Fashion Week, Mugler creative director Miguel Castro Freitas presented "Naturalia X", the third part of a nature trilogy referencing Manfred Thierry Mugler's 1997 "Les Insectes" couture collection, WWD reported on 5 October.
Mugler’s spring-summer 2027 collection, “Naturalia X”, was the third chapter of a trilogy in which creative director Miguel Castro Freitas has explored the flora and fauna in the work of founder Manfred Thierry Mugler, WWD reported on 5 October.
Feral and ethereal
A feather tunic resembling a butterfly wing, croc-embossed leather trousers and a spider-web dress referenced Mugler’s spring 1997 haute couture collection “Les Insectes”. Castro Freitas said backstage that he was looking at “the feral aspect of nature versus the ethereal aspect of nature”. Sculptural tailoring in Mikado silk sat alongside faux-fur trousers and a snakeskin hourglass dress, while specialists worked on couture-grade pieces such as a shaggy hair tunic, latex-fringe evening gowns and moulded leather dresses sprouting flowers.
The stunt
Models walked through a video installation by artist Casper Sejersen with a soundtrack by Teho Teardo featuring a Björk track. In the front row, performance artist Alexis Stone appeared in prosthetic make-up as Manfred Mugler himself, seated next to the late designer’s husband, Krzysztof Leon Dziemaszkiewicz. Castro Freitas said the house had sought his blessing first. WWD noted that online reaction to the stunt was mixed.
