Met Gala 2027 theme: “extraORDINARY” show on everyday fashion replaces scrapped Galliano retrospective

The Met’s Costume Institute will open “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday” on 9 May 2027, exploring how designers transform jeans, T-shirts, puffers and common materials; the Met Gala is set for 3 May.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition: “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday”, on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from 9 May 2027 to 9 January 2028. The Met Gala benefit will take place on Monday, 3 May 2027.

A replacement show

The exhibition replaces the planned “John Galliano: Horizons” retrospective, which drew criticism because of the designer’s history of antisemitic and racist remarks and was scrapped, AP and CBS New York reported.

What it will show

  • How designers rework familiar garments — jeans, T-shirts, puffer coats, a white shirt or a sweatshirt — and materials such as paper, plastic and metal.
  • Two main sections, “Familiar Forms” and “Common Matter”.
  • An opening gallery devoted to Jun Takahashi’s autumn/winter 2024–25 Undercover collection “Watching a Working Woman”, inspired in part by Wim Wenders’s film Perfect Days.
  • Works from the collection plus loans and new acquisitions; the show will also look at how wearing, styling and caring for clothes changes their meaning over time.

“The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears,” said curator in charge Andrew Bolton.

The exhibition and gala are made possible by Instagram, with major funding from Moncler and additional support from Condé Nast, the museum said.
