EASD analysis links meat-derived Neu5Gc with higher type 2 diabetes risk — conference, observational data
On 28 September 2026 News Medical summarised an EASD conference presentation of an observational NutriNet-Santé analysis (89,953 French adults) finding that higher meat-derived Neu5Gc intake was associated with 63% higher type 2 diabetes risk after standard adjustments — with critical limits: not peer-reviewed final, observational, and the link lost significance after adjusting for total red meat.
On 28 September 2026 News Medical reported on a new analysis presented in connection with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). Researchers examined meat-derived Neu5Gc — a sialic acid sugar abundant in red meat — and subsequent type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the French NutriNet-Santé cohort.
What the analysis found
The observational analysis included 89,953 French adults (mean age 42; 79% female) without T2D or cancer at baseline. Over a median follow-up of 7.2 years, 966 T2D cases occurred. Comparing the highest versus lowest quintile of meat-derived Neu5Gc, the investigators reported a 63% higher T2D risk after adjusting for age, sex, physical activity, diet quality, smoking and comorbidities. The association was weaker but still statistically significant after further BMI adjustment. Lead investigator Dr Leopold Fezeu (Université Sorbonne Paris Nord) presented the work.
After adjusting for total red meat intake, the Neu5Gc association weakened and lost statistical significance, though it remained in the same direction. There was no association for dairy-derived Neu5Gc.
Critical limitations
This is a preliminary conference presentation, not yet a final peer-reviewed journal article. It is observational and cannot prove causation. Dietary records are subject to measurement error, and residual confounding is possible. The attenuation after adjusting for total red meat means Neu5Gc may partly mark red-meat intake rather than act as an independent causal sugar. This article is not personal medical advice — talk to a doctor about diet and diabetes risk.
